Axios misrepresents Malpass’s view of global warming

Hans Nichols, of Axios.com, writing:

Administration officials are deeply concerned about Malpass’ lack of response this week when asked if climate change is man-made.

Malpass is David Malpass, currently President of the World Bank.

I prefer to go beyond dismissing David Malpass; I support the abolition of the World Bank. But I also believe in telling the truth, and that’s a big difference I have with Hans Nichols.

One would think, based on Nichols’ statement above, that Malpass was asked if climate change was man-made. He was not. To find out the real question, I had to go see Valérie Volcovici and Kate Abnett, “World Bank’s Malpass faces calls to quit after climate change doubts“, ReutersSeptember 22, 2022. Here is what they write:

Malpass appeared at a New York Times event during Climate Week in New York on Tuesday and was asked if he thinks “the artificial burning of fossil fuels is rapidly and dangerously warming the planet.” Malpass first tried to dodge the question but later said, “I don’t even know. I am not a scientist.

You can believe that humans are causing global warming without believing that it is “rapidly and dangerously warming the planet”. Indeed, as Steven Koonin notedthere is little basis for this latter belief.
