Israeli business leaders today visited President Isaac Herzog at his residence in Jerusalem to discuss the draft compromise plan he intends to present regarding judicial reform legislation.
Among the senior business executives who attended the meeting were Harel Wizel, Liora Ofer, Natan Hetz, Lior Raviv, Shachar Turjeman, Ido Neuberger, Omri Padan and heads of major Israeli banks.
Business leaders have asked President Herzog to stop the legislation, which is moving rapidly through Knesset committees. Herzog replied that he had already called for the legislation to stop and had no plans to do so again. Herzog told the meeting that he intended to present his final plan in the next few days and he asked for their support.
Some business leaders have told the president they support his blueprint, but not unconditionally. They told Herzog that their support for the plan depended on major legal figures also supporting the plan he proposes.
Last week the president attacked the government’s judicial overhaul plan in its current form and said he believed a quick compromise could be reached. “There is an infrastructure here for a quick deal in which the only winners are the State of Israel and its citizens. The series of bills currently being discussed in committee must be quickly eliminated. predatory, it undermines our democratic foundations and therefore must be replaced by another agreed scheme and without delay.
