from Canada Denis Shapovalov suffered a 6-4, 6-4 second-round loss to American Taylor Fritz at the Mexican Open on Wednesday.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the first set, Shapovalov retired the next three games. Fritz has now held the Richmond Hill, Ont., native at bay as Shapovalov only got one game before dropping the set.

In the second, Fritz jumped to a 5-1 advantage. A forced error from Shapovalov led to a two, which Fritz took the lead with a winner and won his fifth game with another forced error from the Canadian.

Shapovalov won the next three games, however, with the third seeing Fritz without a point but committing four straight forced errors.

Fritz returned the favor in the next game, closing the game holding Shapovalov without a point.

Shapovalov had five aces, won 78% of first-serve points and converted 1-of-2 break point chances.

Fritz, the tournament’s third seed, had seven aces and won 97% of first-serve points. He also went 3 for 5 on break point opportunities.
