NextEra Energy (New York stock market :BORN) The subsidiary of Florida Power & Light announced on Friday that it had power restored to all but 31,000 homes and businesses in its territory of the 2.1 million that initially lost service as a result of Hurricane Ian.
However, “thousands” of homes and businesses have been so badly damaged that they cannot safely accept electricity service, FPL said.
Most of Florida’s remaining 74,000 total outages are occurring in communities served by the Lee County Electric Cooperative, which covers the portion of the coast where Ian made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane; the storm cut the only bridges to the islands served by the cooperative.
Analysts estimated that Hurricane Ian insured losses in the “manageable” range of $20 billion to $30 billion.
