I was buying gas recently, and because I was also buying snacks, I went to the gas station to pay the cashier rather than swiping my credit card at the pump. I said something quiet about “gas prices are up” and he visibly winced. So I added something like: “Of course, tDoes a gas station make, what, about 5 cents when you sell a gallon of gas?“He visibly relaxed and even gave me a contrite smile. This made me suspect that the customer service people behind the counter everywhere probably got a lot of direct face-to-face heat for higher prices.
