In Malawi, more than 400 people died in floods caused by Cyclone Freddy.

International help has started to arrive and rescue teams are still searching for people stranded by the floodwaters.

Hundreds of evacuation centers have been set up across the country for survivors, tens of thousands of people homeless in Malawi and an estimated 345,000 people affected by heavy rains, floods and landslides.

“It was very painful waiting for a boat to get to the mainland because here there is no food…we are very hungry,” flood victim Isaac Welford told Al Jazeera. Nsanje district, which has been isolated for days.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller, reporting from Nsanje, said heavy rains and winds caused intense flooding, cutting off its residents from food, water, electricity and health facilities. Farmlands and crops were devastated, she added.

The cyclone left a trail of devastation across southeastern Africa. Neighboring Mozambique and the island nation of Madagascar have also been affected.

In Mozambique, at least 67 people have died, according to President Filipe Nyusi, with another 50,000 displaced.

The death toll in both countries is expected to continue to rise. At least 17 people have been killed in the island nation of Madagascar.
