Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 to be the company’s “year of efficiency” and, according to a releasewhich includes “refining” Meta’s distributed labor model.

On Tuesday, Zuckerberg shared a note with employees announcing his intention to dismiss 10,000 additional workers and incur restructuring costs. Meta had previously laid off 11,000 employees at the end of last year.

As part of the announcement, Zuckerberg said internal analysis of employee performance data suggests engineers who work in person are “getting more done.” He said Meta remained committed to distributed work, but he encouraged employees to find more opportunities to work with each other in person.

“Our initial analysis of performance data suggests that engineers who joined Meta in person and then transitioned remotely or stayed in person performed better on average than people who joined remotely,” Zuckerberg said. . “This analysis also shows that early-career engineers do better on average when working face-to-face with teammates at least three days a week.”

Meta was one of the first technology companies to allow its employees to start working remotely during the early days of the covid pandemic. The company carried its flexible working policies until 2021 when he announced that workers at all levels of the company could apply to work full-time remotely.

Meta is always promoting remote roles in 2023, and many employees have the option to work in person. But since big tech companies like Amazon suddenly announced plans to return to the office at least three days a week earlier this year, Meta may have started to reconsider.

“This requires further study, but our hypothesis is that building trust in people is even easier and that those relationships help us work more effectively,” Zuckerberg said.
