The vaunted defense of the 8-seeded Ole Miss women’s basketball team put an end to Gonzaga in an NCAA Tournament first-round game in Seattle, leading to a dominating 71-48 victory for the Rebels .
Ole Miss held the 9-seeded Bulldogs to .293 total shots from the field (17 of 58), including 1 of 16 (.063) on 3-point attempts.
Snudda Collins led the Rebels with 15 points. Angel Baker and Madison Scott added 11 points each.
Scott also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Ole Miss opened up what had been a close game in the second quarter, beating Gonzaga 22-11 to take a 34-21 halftime lead.
The Rebels were never seriously threatened afterward, taking a 59-31 lead after three quarters before putting the finishing touches to a rout in the fourth.
Ole Miss also held a decisive 50-36 rebound advantage, while 10 players on the roster broke through the scoring column.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga was trailed by Yvonne Elim’s game-high 19 points on 8 of 14 shots on goal. But the rest of the team were ruthlessly hounded by the Ole Miss defense. , going 9 for 44 from the field for just over 20%.
