Gerwyn Price beat Chris Dobey 6-4 to win Night Seven of the Cazoo Premier League – after his opponent ended Michael van Gerwen’s hopes of a fourth straight win with a stunning 6-0 shutout.

Price rallied after falling 2-0 at Dobey in the final in Nottingham to go 3-2 ahead with successive over-ton finishes and finally closed out their win after missing five match darts in the ninth sleeve.

The night’s win was the Welshman’s second of the season, after Cardiff in week two, and lifted him into second place in the table behind Van Gerwen.

Premier League Darts Results – Night Seven

Quarter-finals Dmitri Van den Bergh 6-4 Nathan Aspinal
Jonny Clayton 4-6 Gerwyn Award
Chris Dobey 6-4 Michael Smith
Michel van Gerwen 6-1 Peter Wright
Semi-finals Dmitri Van den Bergh 4-6 Gerwyn Award
Michel van Gerwen 0-6 Chris Dobey
Final Gerwyn Award 6-4 Chris Dobey

But Dobey produced the performance of the night, inflicting the first Premier League sweep of Van Gerwen’s career as the Dutchman’s bid to follow his successes in Dublin, Exeter and Liverpool was shattered in a remarkable semi-final .

Dobey had led Michael Smith 5-0 in the quarter-finals only for the reigning world champion to defend at 5-4 before ‘Hollywood’ triumphed with a pitching break on the bull.

There would be no Van Gerwen return in a game in which Dobey started and finished with triple-digit finishes as he broke his opponent’s 10-game winning streak.

Dobey was unable to pick up his second night win of the campaign, after Belfast in week one, but will head to his native north-east for next week’s round at Newcastle full of confidence.

The quarter-finals of next week’s stage are determined by the current standings – and ultimately will be an exact repeat of the fixtures in Nottingham, with runaway league leader van Gerwen facing lowest Peter Wright and Dobey, sixth. face Smith, third

Other matches in the first round will see Week 7 pivot Price against fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton once again and fifth-placed Dimitri van den Bergh against fourth-placed Nathan Aspinall.

More soon.
