At a press conference introducing new commissioner Mario Cecchini on Thursday, Richard Letourneau, chairman of the QMJHL members’ council, said the league plans to confirm the terms at a meeting in June.
“At the members’ assembly on February 23, the members’ assembly approved the ban on fighting,” he said. “So, yes, fighting is prohibited, now there are a few terms to finalize. Indeed, we have an expanded hockey committee made up of (league directors) to determine how to apply this rule, have it accepted by the minister and have it approved by the members’ assembly in June.
Cecchini says he has a meeting with Quebec Sports Minister Isabelle Charest to discuss the issue.
“I think there’s more discussion about whether fighting will be banned now regarding the ‘how’ and what penalties will follow for players who continue to favor this type of play – the penalties will have to be severe,” he said. -he declares. “That will be determined with the committee and announced, I think, later in June. I don’t have the whole schedule in mind yet, but I know there are sessions in June, and that’s when we’ll probably make it public.
The Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League have not announced any plans to toughen fighting rules this season.
