This robot can tell where it is by detecting disturbances in magnetic fields

A robot can autonomously navigate inside a building using only a magnetometer and a detailed map of local magnetic anomalies.

The technique could provide a way for people and robots to find their way around tall buildings, but the technology may be far from commercial application due to the high cost and size of the sensors.
