The poll Trump referred to didn’t show it on Biden. Trump seems to be referring to the ABC News/Washington Post poll that has been questioned as an erroneous outlier. No other poll has Trump leading Biden in the general election, but reality is not the point of Trump’s message.
Donald Trump is doing what he always does. He’s trying to salt the ground and impunity of any evidence against him that could lead to a federal criminal indictment in the Classified Documents case.
Trump is obsessed with Jack Smith in the middle of the night because he realizes Smith is the biggest legal threat he faces. Trump also knows that a federal criminal indictment makes him virtually ineligible in November 2024.
The former president needn’t worry about his supporters jumping ship for DeSantis, but he’ll have virtually no chance of beating Biden if all of his campaign coverage is about the criminal charges he faces.
