ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey’s central bank net foreign exchange reserves fell into negative territory for the first time since 2002, standing at -151.3 million dollars on May 19, official data showed on Thursday, as that it was looking to counter demand for currency ahead of Sunday’s second round. vote.

President Tayyip Erdogan comfortably led rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the May 14 presidential election, but fell just short of the 50% needed to win. The result will be decided in a second round on May 28.

Demand for foreign currency in Turkey hit record highs ahead of May 14, with businesses and individuals expecting the pound, which lost 44% in 2021 and 30% in 2022, to plunge after the vote.

Central bank foreign exchange reserves have declined in recent years due to costly market interventions and other efforts to cool demand for foreign currencies.

The bank’s net reserves fell $2.48 billion in the week to May 19, to their lowest level since February 2002. They have fallen $27.7 billion since the end of 2022.

The exchange rate used by Reuters on Thursday was 19.7607. Net foreign exchange reserves are pushed deeper into negative territory once outstanding swaps, which stood at $33.50 billion on Wednesday, are deducted.

During the first five weeks of 2002, net reserves were in negative territory, according to official data dating back to the beginning of this year.
